BILL BARN COAT

Every GINEW story starts somewhere real. This one starts with my great-grandfather, known as Chi-ininii, "Big Man" to Ojibwe speakers, and Bill to everyone else.

In crafting the Bill Barn Coat, we meticulously recreated a garment inspired by his life. Coats like this were never just clothing to men like Bill. They were tools, worn in machine shops, forests, and fields by relatives who dedicated themselves to the hard labor of providing for their families. Through exploring our Anishinaabe and Oneida heritages, I've come to deeply appreciate that history of work and resilience. When you wrap yourself in this coat, you're wrapping yourself in the ways of our ancestors.

The shell is 14oz custom-woven Japanese selvedge denim, made for us by the artisan mill Nihon Menpu, whose textures and colors we fell for the moment we saw them at our first show in Japan. Every button carries the GINEW leaf, stamped from an actual leaf that fell from the white oak tree Amanda and I were married under, on a small farm in the Wisconsin countryside. The original button also carries the marks "WI & TX," a nod to the two states we called home in GINEW's first year.

The lining is 32oz un-napped wool, a weight almost no one else uses today, in the Facing East pattern, woven for us by Pendleton®, and designed by the living legend Dyani White Hawk. Dyani is a family friend whose creativity I've had the privilege of watching bloom for years, from her earliest student exhibits to major installations around the world. Her work has always moved me. I remember standing breathless in front of her paintings the first time I saw them. Years later, it was an honor to have her bring that same vision to this coat's liner.

Each Bill Barn Coat is made to order, cut and sewn one at a time by Apparel Werks in Portland, Oregon. Nothing about this coat is rushed or wasted. This is a limited edition of 10. Once they're gone, they're gone.
